Derek Stone - Banjo / Vocals
Derek first started playing Banjo in the summer of 2022 when he and family moved to Chattanooga, TN. His first banjo teacher was Aaron Holder, who worked at the local folk music store at the.
Once he learned a few rolls, hand patterns, and timing, Derek was on his way.
His first competition was in 2023 at Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree, where he won first place in the beginner banjo category. In the following years he entered the adult banjo competition and went third place each time.
He counts many of the greats as influencers to his style banjo. These include: Earl Scruggs, JD Crowe, Don Reno, Ron Stewart, Sonny Osborne, Donnie Little, Jim Mills, Bruce Land, Trevor Holder, and Sammy Shelor.
Derek first met Carl in the summer of 2023 at the 9 Mile Bluegrass festival in Pikeville Tennessee. Where they jammed, had a great time and some good laughs.
After seeing Derek's progression in his banjo abilities and his presence on stage, And recognizing his potential, Carl asked Derek to join his Upward Road band.
